Gardens

The traditional English walled garden is a delight. Untouched by 18th century landscapers, it retains its 17th century outlines and charm. It is now nearing the end of a restoration project and visitors can wander round the knot garden, the avenue of espaliered apple trees, the nuttery, the kitchen garden, the bowling green and the lawn.

garden-2.jpgFormal gravelled paths and historic architectural features intermingle with specimen trees, mixed borders and a beautiful rose archway The quaint garden house, once the scene of romantic dalliance by the occupants of Eyam Hall, now serves a practical purpose as the gardeners’ office.

Planting work continues to provide a combination of historic and contemporary species and their practical maintenance in the 21st century.

Early 2010 sees the start of the next phase in the garden’s history. Plans are afoot to make the extensive borders easier to keep up-to-scratch, whilst injecting more summer colour and winter interest. This is being undertaken in collaboration with local garden designer and horticulturist Peter Burgess-Allen (aka BA Garden Design).
